Portrait of a sea captain c. 1860
A half-length portrait of a sea captain, oil painting on canvas c. 1860. The ship’s captain holds a pair of binoculars in his right hand. Objects and attributes were often included with the sitter to refer to an individual’s occupation or something of close personal significance. The captain’s buttons also depict an anchor on each. Often sea captains, or ship’s masters, were portrayed holding a telescope, and binoculars are not often seen.
