ANTIQUE 20thC MEIJI JAPANESE SOLID SILVER MASSIVE DRAGON JEWELLERY BOX c.1900
Antique early-20th Century rare Japanese Meiji period Solid Silver jewellery box, exceptionally large and magnificent, double skinned body, spot-hammered surface, sides and lid are embossed in high-relief with a tridimensional dragon, handle to the cover, ebonized wood base, the interior is lined in velvet and fitted for jewellery. This box is unusually large and beautifully made, particularly good condition, original fittings and original key, lock in fully working condition.
The base is Hallmarked Japanese silver, 'Jun-gin' mark, meaning 'pure silver' (950+ high grade silver, the finest silver the world has ever known), used primary in during the Meiji period (1868-1912). The style and the shape of the mark closely remind similar boxes retailed by Arthur & Bond, one of the most important Japanese firms active in Yokohama.
In Great Condition - no damage, just general wear.
