Antique Silver Gilt Brigg Walking Cane with Hidden Pencil. 1899 Patent. Really Rare and Beautiful Cane.

Ref# MTDB-4181
I have for unique Antique, 1899 Brigg Walking Stick, with a hidden Pencil. I believe the cane would have been used for race meetings etc as a place to store your pencil you use to mark your racing card. It would have been a high end fashion item in Victorian times.

It has a silver gilt collar, dated to 1899 and stamped with the maker Brigg. The feature I find very interesting is the fact that the removable pencil outer case is stamped with not only Brigg, but the word Patent. I believe this makes it an important cane for Brigg collectors or System Cane collectors as it is an early model that became very well liked in 1900+. I have seen a few for sale all 1900+ (1904 and a 1923 one) but have never seen a pre 1900 Brigg hidden pencil cane for sale and neither have I seen a cane of this style with Patent on it.

The cane is in great condition. The bamboo is lovely. It has a few marks, some scuffs under the handle, but no cracks or major damage I can see. It does have a sticker mark on it, but believe that could be easily removed. It is a lovely deep brown colour and still has a great coat of varnish over it, possibly original varnish. The Ferrule is also in excellent condition. I'm not sure if it's the original, but if it is a replacement I believe it to be an old one. Though the cane is so well looked after it could well be the original.

The silver gilt collar is also in great condition. Hallmarks are clear enough to read. Some slight rubbing but you can tell its London and 1899 (letter d). The Silver Gilt collar is engraved with 'RW.' I don't have any info on who RW was, but feel it adds to the history of it.

The pencil top has some discolouring/rubbing but nothing major. It has its original lead still in it, but it needs sharpening.

I have attached some high quality photos, to help you with the condition. As I have said, it is in really great condition. There are some marks to it, but for its age personally it's one of the best canes I have seen and would make a great addition to any Brigg or System Cane collector.

The cane measures approx. 94cm in height.

Brigg was a very important Cane and Umbrella maker. They were established in 1836 and by 1893 they had their 1st Royal Appointment for their Umbrellas. This was the 1st Royal Appointment for any Umbrella maker. That shows the quality of their products. They really were (and still are!) high end Cane and Umbrella makers.
