Three Legged Irish 'Creepie' Stool

Ref# DPTR-4782
Seldom seen are the three legged variety of Irish 'creepie' stool, and whilst they were common place throughout the island so few have survived.

This example offered in old paint is of the expected simplistic construction. The top, probably sycamore, has been simply hewn and the legs too shaped by hand and no doubt renewed on several occasions.

Three legs gave balance on an earthen floor and their low stature ensured the user could sit below the smoke of the turf fire, as many poor dwellings had no chimney.

Irish, early 19th century.
